Many horses and ponies have large, fleshy tongues that naturally fill much of the space inside their mouths. When a conventional bit has a larger mouthpiece, there is simply less room available, which can create discomfort and resistance.

For many years, riders were taught that a thicker bit was kinder. Today, it is better understood that a slimmer mouthpiece provides more room inside the horse’s mouth, particularly for horses with fleshy tongues or low palates.
